Debate emerges over Jasbir Jassi performing kirtan at religious event

A discussion has emerged within Sikh religious circles after well-known Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi performed shabad gayan and kirtan during a religious event. The issue gained attention following his participation in kirtan at a shaheedi samagam in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

According to information shared publicly, Jasbir Jassi performed kirtan alongside Bhai Harjinder Singh Ji Srinagar Wale during the event. A video of the performance was later posted on social media, which led to wider debate and reactions from sections of the Sikh community.

Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj responded to the matter, stating that Sikh tradition and the Sikh Rehat Maryada clearly outline who is permitted to perform kirtan in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. He emphasized that kirtan is not merely a musical presentation but a spiritual practice rooted in the teachings of the Guru.

The Jathedar further stated that, according to Sikh religious codes, only a practising Sikh is permitted to perform kirtan in the Guru’s presence, and that this responsibility carries religious and moral significance. He noted that adherence to established maryada is essential to maintaining the sanctity of Sikh religious practices.
