Man with ‘large knife’ arrested at Calgary city hall

Police say a man armed with a large knife inside Calgary City Hall was arrested this morning. Police and firefighters were called to the building located at the corner of 7 Avenue and Mcleod Trail just before 4 a-m. Police say the suspect, who was armed with a knife, set four separate fires on the third floor, but minimal damage was caused due to the building's sprinkler system. The Calgary Fire Department says that though the fire damage is minimal, there is water damage from the sprinkler system and it's expected the third floor will be off limits for some time.

Smith, focus of rivals' debate criticism, deemed UCP leadership front-runner

Political observers say this week's United Conservative leadership debate demonstrated that former Wildrose leader Danielle Smith is the front-runner in the race to replace Jason Kenney as party leader and premier. Pollster Janet Brown and political scientist Duane Bratt say the way Smith was attacked and criticized by multiple opponents at the debate make it clear she is seen as the one to beat. Smith came under fire for her proposed Alberta sovereignty act, which she promises to pass this fall if she wins. The act would grant the province the power to ignore federal laws and court rulings de

B.C. ostrich farm loses court bid to prevent avian flu cull

The Federal Court of Appeal has rejected a bid by a British Columbia ostrich farm to prevent the culling of its flock that had been infected with avian flu. The court has dismissed two applications by Universal Ostrich Farms over the cull of about 400 birds, which was sought by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. It says the "stamping out" policy of the agency, in which infected poultry flocks are killed, is reasonable, and that criteria to apply it had been met in the case of the farm in Edgewood, B.C. The planned cull had drawn opposition from United States officials, including Health Secre
