Canada's economy grew 2.2% annualized in Q1 as businesses raced to beat tariffs
Statistics Canada says the economy outperformed expectations in the first quarter of the year as businesses raced to get ahead of looming tariffs from the United States.
The agency says real gross domestic product grew at an annualized pace of 2.2 per cent in the first quarter, a tenth of a point higher than the previous quarter.That topped StatCan's own early estimate of 1.5 per cent growth and a Reuters poll of economists calling for a gain of 1.7 per cent.

Boy, 14, charged with murder in attack on senior in Pickering, Ont., police say
Durham Regional Police say a 14-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after an elderly woman was fatally stabbed outside her home in Pickering, Ont., yesterday afternoon.
Police say it happened just after 3 p.m. on Lynn Heights Drive, where the suspect allegedly stabbed the woman in what they call a ``sadistic and cowardly unprovoked attack.''
Police initially said the suspect was 13 when they announced his arrest.They have not released the name of the victim, but organizers of a vigil set to take place in the neighbourhood tonight have named her as Elenor in soc

Sikh groups say Ottawa should not invite India's Modi to G7 summit
Sikh organizations are calling on Ottawa to break with a five-year tradition by not inviting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 summit.
Canada is hosting the G7 leaders' summit next month in Kananaskis, Alta. with the leaders from those nations expected to attend — France, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States, along with the president of the European Commission.
But Ottawa has been tight-lipped on which leaders it has invited outside that core group of like-minded liberal democracies.

Panthers advance to 3rd straight Stanley Cup final, Oilers take on Stars tonight
The Edmonton Oilers have the opportunity to close out the Western Conference final and head to a Stanley CupFinal rematch. Edmonton takes a 3-1 series lead into Game 5 at Dallas on Thursday night.

Carney says he welcomes tariff decision by U.S. trade court
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has welcomed the US International Trade Court's decision to block President Donald Trump's tariffs.
The prime minister also made it clear that Canada will continue to work on expanding its trade with other markets because Trump has not eliminated steel, aluminum and automotive tariffs.
On Wednesday, the US International Trade Court ruled that Trump does not have the authority to impose tariffs on every country using the International Economic Emergency Powers Act.

Canadian doctors group challenging constitutionality of Alberta transgender law
A group representing Canada's doctors is challenging the constitutionality of Alberta's legislation limiting access to medical treatment for transgender youth, arguing it violates their Charter right to freedom of conscience. Oilers win game 4, push Dallas Stars on brink of elimination
