The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is investigating a homicide after Abbotsford Police responded to a report of suspicious circumstances at a hotel in Abbotsford.

IHIT said Abbotsford Police Department patrol officers were called at about 11:42 a.m. to a hotel in the 32100 block of Marshall Road. Police located a deceased person inside a hotel room and secured the scene. Investigators said evidence obtained at the scene confirmed the incident as a homicide and one man was arrested. IHIT said the incident was isolated and there is no ongoing risk to the public.

IHIT said the homicide is not believed to be connected to the ongoing extortion-related incidents reported elsewhere in the Fraser Valley.

In an update issued Jan. 16, 2026, IHIT said the B.C. Prosecution Service has charged 26-year-old Sondeep Singh Gill of Abbotsford with second-degree murder and indignity to human remains. IHIT said the victim was a 30-year-old woman who was residing in Abbotsford. IHIT said details about the relationship between the victim and Gill remain subject to the ongoing investigation.

“The quick response and strong investigational work from AbbyPD officers and the investigative team at IHIT was instrumental in getting the investigation to this stage,” said Corporal Sukhi Dhesi, IHIT Media Relations Officer. IHIT said that because the matter is now before the courts, it will not provide additional details.

Canada’s Economy Contracts in Fourth Quarter of 2025 as Annual Growth Slows

Canada’s economy recorded a contraction in the final three months of 2025, defying earlier expectations of stable growth, according to new data released by Statistics Canada on Friday. The federal agency reported that real gross domestic product declined at an annualized rate of 0.6 per cent in the October to December quarter. Economists had anticipated little to no change during that period. The slowdown was attributed in part to weaker residential investment and lower inventory rebuilding by manufacturers. Statistics Canada said companies met demand by drawing down existing inventories ins

Delhi court acquits Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in excise policy case, CBI to appeal

A Delhi trial court has acquitted former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia in the Delhi excise policy case, ruling that the prosecution failed to establish the charges beyond reasonable doubt. In its order, the court said the Central Bureau of Investigation did not present sufficient evidence to substantiate allegations linked to the now-scrapped liquor policy. The judge observed that serious criminal charges require strong and credible proof and cannot be based on assumptions. The case centred on alleged irregularities in the formulation and
