Alberta education minister dismisses failed recall effort as sign of support

Alberta’s education minister says a failed recall petition against him signals continued support for the United Conservative government’s agenda rather than dissatisfaction among voters.

Demetrios Nicolaides said in a letter to constituents that the unsuccessful campaign reinforces the province’s current direction on education and other priorities, adding that the outcome encourages the government to continue with its work. He described the result as a validation of policies introduced over the past year.

Nicolaides was the first MLA among more than two dozen members of Alberta’s legislature to face a recall attempt during the final months of 2025. The recall process was enabled by provincial legislation that allows voters to seek a byelection if sufficient signatures are collected within a fixed time period.

The petition, submitted this week by organizer Jenny Yeremiy, fell short of the required threshold. It gathered just over 40 per cent of the roughly 16,000 valid signatures needed to force a vote on whether Nicolaides would retain his seat.

Elections Alberta confirmed the recall process has formally concluded and said it will not proceed with further verification of signatures, closing the file on the petition.
