Burnaby RCMP is calling on both drivers and pedestrians to take extra care as winter conditions set in, after officers responded to five separate incidents involving cyclists, pedestrians, or scooter users over the past two days. Police say the collisions occurred during dark and rainy periods, conditions that typically lead to reduced visibility on local roads.

Cpl. Mike Kalanj said the seasonal weather continues to create higher risks for anyone travelling on or near busy streets. He noted that most of the recent collisions happened in marked crosswalks or bike lanes. Three of the individuals involved were sent to hospital, though all injuries were considered minor.

Police say this time of year is often associated with serious outcomes on B.C. roads. Kalanj added that officers regularly notify families of deadly incidents during the fall and winter months, urging both motorists and those walking or cycling to take steps that reduce risk.

The detachment is reminding pedestrians to use crosswalks, maintain eye contact with drivers, avoid distractions such as headphones, and wear reflective or bright clothing. Drivers are being asked to slow down, actively scan for vulnerable road users, stay focused on the road, and ensure their vehicles are ready for wet and dark conditions.
