Coquitlam RCMP are urging residents to take extra precautions after a recent increase in residential break and enters across the city, many involving similar methods and locations. Police say the incidents have raised concern among investigators due to their frequency and pattern.

Mounties report receiving about 21 complaints of residential break-ins since November 23. In most cases, suspects entered homes through rear sliding glass doors, with incidents largely occurring between mid-afternoon and late evening, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Police note that homes backing onto green spaces, trails, or back alleys appear to be the primary targets.

Sergeant Brent Misquita of the Coquitlam RCMP STRIKE Force says officers are actively investigating and working to identify those responsible. He adds that public awareness plays a key role, as timely reporting of suspicious activity can help police respond more effectively and prevent further incidents.

RCMP are advising residents to secure doors and windows, activate home alarm systems, and avoid hiding spare keys outside or in vehicles. Police also recommend using security cameras, setting timers for lights or electronics when away, and arranging for someone to check on the home during extended absences.

Residents are also encouraged to consider joining or starting a local Block Watch group, a free community program that shares crime prevention information tailored to neighbourhoods. Police say community involvement can help deter criminal activity and improve overall safety in Coquitlam.
