SGPC removes Giani Raghbir Singh as Head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib

BY Connect Newsroom - Ramandeep Kaur, Feb 26, 2026 2:37 PM - REPORT AN ERROR

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has removed Giani Raghbir Singh from his position as Head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib with immediate effect, following the expiry of a 72 hour notice issued to him earlier this week.

The decision was announced by SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami during a press conference in Amritsar. He said the action was taken after Giani Raghbir Singh did not provide satisfactory evidence to support allegations he had publicly raised against the Sikh governing body.

According to the SGPC, the former Head Granthi had been asked to substantiate his claims within 72 hours. Dhami stated that recent public statements made by Giani Raghbir Singh had raised serious concerns and had adversely affected the reputation of the committee. He added that holding a respected religious position carries responsibility, and making allegations without documented proof had compelled the committee to act.

The development has drawn attention within Sikh religious and community circles, as the Head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib holds one of the most prominent religious roles in Sikhism. Any administrative decision related to the post is typically viewed as significant for Sikh institutions in Punjab and the global Sikh diaspora.

Further reaction from Sikh organizations and community representatives is expected in the coming days as the situation develops.
