Construction begins on new schools, additions for Burnaby students
Construction is beginning on new K-12 classrooms at three schools in Burnaby, bringing more than 1,000 new student spaces to meet the needs of the community.
"Supporting our schools is one of the most important things we can do for our community,” said Janet Routledge, MLA for Burnaby North. “These types of projects help ensure that families have access to the services and opportunities they deserve."

Bridge replacement will improve Highway 1 through Fraser Canyon
Work will get underway in fall 2025 on a project to replace the aging Sackum overhead bridge on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Lytton, improving safety and supporting the long-term reliability of Highway 1 in the region.
The project includes the design and construction of a modern two-lane bridge over the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) rail line.
Additional upgrades will improve safety by realigning a section of the highway north of the bridge. This upgrade will remove a short passing lane that no longer meets standards, and create a gentler curve, wider and more consistent shoulders

Police investigate suspicious sudden death
Police are investigating after a man died in hospital following his discovery suffering from serious injuries early Sunday morning.
On August 10, 2025, at 12:42 a.m., the Port Alberni RCMP received a report of an assault near the intersection of Johnston Road and Victoria Quay. There, police located a man suffering from serious injuries. He was transported to hospital but succumbed to his injuries despite life-saving efforts.

Two vehicle collision claims life of one driver
On August 11, 2025 at 1:42pm, the Fort St John RCMP received a report of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 97 North at the 269 Rd, just north of Fort St John. It was reported that an SUV had collided with a tanker truck.
Fort St John RCMP, BC Ambulance Service and Charlie Lake and Fort St John Fire Services all attended the scene.
Fort St John RCMP frontline police officers determined that a southbound SUV failed to stop for a red light and collided with the tanker truck while the tanker truck was turning left onto Highway 97 from 269 Rd.
The driver of the SUV was declared deceased on scene.

One dead, man arrested after shooting in apartment in Abbotsford, B.C.
Police in Abbotsford, B.C., say a man is dead and another is in custody after a shooting at an apartment building.
Abbotsford police say the incident happened at around 4 p.m. Monday in the 30400 block of Cardinal Avenue, where officers responded to a call reporting a shooting.
Police say officers at the scene found the incident took place in one unit in the apartment complex, and the male victim had already died.
Another man found at the scene was arrested, and police say there is no ongoing danger to the public.

'Day of action' for Air Canada flight attendants at major airports
Air Canada flight attendants staged demonstrations at airports in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal on Wednesday as part of a National Day of Action organized by their union.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents more than 9,500 flight attendants, says the goal is to raise awareness of what it describes as “poverty wages” and unpaid labour that occurs when crews are on duty but not in the air.

At 6:30 pm on July 27, 2025, in the 200 block of Selby Road in Nanaimo, a witness saw a male punch and kick his German Shepherd.
