Former DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar denied bail by CBI court

Former Punjab Police Deputy Inspector General Harcharan Singh Bhullar has suffered a legal setback after a CBI special court in Chandigarh rejected his bail application. The order was passed on Friday following a detailed hearing in the case.

During the proceedings, the court heard arguments from both the prosecution and the defence. The hearing took place after the court had earlier directed both sides to submit their replies and present their positions on the bail plea.

Bhullar had also approached the Supreme Court seeking interim bail and a stay on the ongoing CBI proceedings. However, the apex court declined to grant him any relief, allowing the investigation to continue.

The case stems from a complaint filed by an individual alleging that Bhullar and his aide, Krishanu Sharda, demanded and accepted a bribe. After completing its preliminary inquiry, the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested both accused in October, allegedly while they were in possession of the bribe amount.

The case has drawn attention as it involves a senior retired police officer and highlights ongoing scrutiny of corruption allegations involving high-ranking officials. Further proceedings in the matter are expected to continue before the CBI court.
