Homicide investigators in Abbotsford say a 26-year-old man is now charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a 30-year-old woman whose body was discovered inside a local hotel last month.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says Sondeep Singh Gill was initially charged with second-degree murder, but the charge was upgraded following additional investigative work and a review of the evidence. Gill also faces a separate charge of indignity to human remains.

Police were first called to the hotel after patrol officers received reports of suspicious circumstances. Investigators later confirmed the case as a homicide, and one man was arrested at the scene and taken into custody.

Authorities have identified the victim as an Abbotsford woman. Police say the nature of the relationship between the accused and the victim is still under investigation, and no further details have been released.

IHIT says the investigation remains active, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact police as the case proceeds through the courts.
