Alberta election agency approves proposed separation referendum question

BY Connect Newsroom - Ramandeep Kaur, Dec 23, 2025 12:29 PM - REPORT AN ERROR

The Alberta Legislature building in Edmonton, where referendum legislation was recently amended.

Alberta’s election authority has approved a proposed referendum question that would ask voters whether the province should separate from Canada and become an independent country.

Elections Alberta confirmed the question meets the technical requirements under provincial legislation. The wording asks voters whether they agree that Alberta should cease to be part of Canada in order to become an independent state.

The application was submitted by the Alberta Prosperity Project, an organization that advocates for increased provincial autonomy and independence. The group now has until early January to appoint a financial officer, a mandatory step before it can begin collecting signatures in support of holding a referendum.

Under Alberta’s updated referendum rules, proponents must gather approximately 178,000 valid signatures within a four-month period to trigger a provincewide vote. If the threshold is met, the referendum question would be placed before Albertans at a future date determined by the government.

A similar question submitted by the same group in the past was delayed following a court challenge. The approval comes weeks after the provincial government amended Alberta’s referendum legislation, lowering the signature threshold and shortening the collection period, changes that have sparked debate among constitutional experts and political observers about their potential impact.
