Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says the province is encouraged by the federal government’s latest list of major projects flagged for potential fast-track approval, even though a proposed bitumen pipeline sought by her government was not included. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced earlier today that seven additional energy and infrastructure proposals have been sent to the federal major projects office for further review.

The projects identified by Ottawa include a nickel mine in northern Ontario, a hydroelectric development near Iqaluit, and two initiatives in northwest British Columbia involving a transmission line and a liquefied natural gas facility. None of the additions involve new Alberta-based projects, though provincial officials say the province remains a significant player in national energy development.

Smith told reporters in Calgary that Alberta continues to negotiate with Ottawa on the bitumen pipeline plan, which she says is in the final stages of discussion. She added that the province expects clarity in the coming days on whether the federal government will support Alberta’s proposal.

The premier also confirmed that conversations with the federal government include potential exemptions or amendments to federal energy legislation. Smith has previously argued that regulatory changes are needed to support large-scale resource development and ensure competitiveness across Western Canada.
