Calgary man charged after drone used to smuggle drugs into Manitoba prison
BY Connect Newsroom - Jasmine Singh, Feb 11, 2026 2:39 PM - REPORT AN ERRORA Calgary man is facing drug trafficking charges after authorities allege a drone was used to deliver illicit substances to a federal prison in Manitoba.
The RCMP say officers were alerted early Sunday morning after a drone dropped a package onto the grounds of Stony Mountain Institution, located north of Winnipeg. Correctional Service Canada confirmed the package contained methamphetamine and other controlled substances.
Police said officers who were already in the area observed a vehicle parked near the institution around the same time. The vehicle was stopped, and investigators reported finding a drone, a black carrying case labelled with a drone manufacturer’s name, and an additional package inside the vehicle.
According to RCMP, the second package contained balloons filled with methamphetamine, cocaine and other drugs. Authorities estimate the institutional value of the seized drugs at approximately 600,000 dollars.
Correctional Service Canada has previously warned that drones are increasingly being used to introduce contraband into federal facilities, posing risks to inmate safety and institutional security. The investigation remains ongoing.
