Former federal cabinet minister Chrystia Freeland has been appointed as an economic adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding to her ongoing role in supporting Ukraine as it continues to defend itself against Russia’s invasion.

Zelenskyy announced the appointment on social media, saying Ukraine must strengthen its internal resilience as the country works to sustain its economy during the nearly four-year war. Freeland has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine and has previously argued that the country has the potential to become a major economic force by pursuing opportunities lost after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Freeland, who has Ukrainian ancestry, served as deputy prime minister and finance minister in Justin Trudeau’s government before stepping away from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cabinet in September. She continues to represent the Toronto-area riding of University—Rosedale as a Liberal member of Parliament.

In a related role, Freeland was recently named Canada’s special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine, a position focused on long-term economic recovery and rebuilding once hostilities end. Canada has been among Ukraine’s strongest international supporters, providing military, financial, and humanitarian assistance since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.

Her new advisory position comes as Prime Minister Carney travels to Paris to meet with European leaders and other allies of Ukraine to discuss diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict and supporting Ukraine’s future stability.
