The Punjab government has once again extended winter holidays for schools across the state, citing intense cold weather and persistent fog conditions. Under the revised order, all government and private schools in Punjab will now remain closed until January 13 and reopen on January 14, following the Lohri festival.

Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said the decision was taken in response to the ongoing cold wave, which has led to a sharp drop in temperatures and reduced visibility in many districts. He said student safety remains the government’s top priority during the peak winter period.

Officials noted that prolonged exposure to extreme cold and dense fog poses health risks, particularly for young children who commute early in the morning. The extension is intended to protect both students and school staff as weather conditions continue to worsen across the region.

Weather agencies have forecast that cold wave conditions are likely to persist in the coming days, with night temperatures remaining below seasonal averages in several parts of Punjab. Similar school closures have been announced in neighbouring states as authorities respond to winter-related safety concerns.

The announcement is being closely followed by Punjabi families in Canada, particularly in British Columbia and Alberta, where many maintain close ties with relatives in Punjab and track developments affecting education and daily life back home.
