Surrey Police Service officers issued five excessive speeding tickets during a single morning of enforcement this week, with the majority occurring in active construction zones, according to police.

Road Safety Unit officers conducted targeted enforcement on January 7, focusing on areas where road work was underway. Police say four of the five tickets were issued in construction zones, including one case where a driver was allegedly travelling at 102 kilometres per hour in a posted 30 kilometre per hour zone.

Police say speeding remains one of the leading causes of serious crashes, and construction zones present added risks for road workers and motorists. Each year, workers across British Columbia are injured or killed in work zones when drivers fail to slow down or remain attentive.

Under provincial rules, speed limits in construction zones are typically reduced to 70 kilometres per hour on highways and 30 kilometres per hour on municipal roads when workers are present. Surrey police note that fines are doubled in these zones, and heavy commercial vehicles are required to use speed limiters.

Surrey Police Service is urging drivers to remain alert, follow posted signage, and adjust their speed to protect workers and other road users as construction activity continues across the city.
