Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has expressed condolences following a deadly shooting at a secondary school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, that left 10 people dead, including the alleged gunman.

In a public statement, Smith said her thoughts are with the students, staff and families affected, adding that Alberta stands with the entire Tumbler Ridge community during what she described as an unimaginable tragedy.

According to the BC RCMP, officers responded to reports of shots fired at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at approximately 1:20 p.m. Police said six people were pronounced dead at the scene, while another victim died while being transported to hospital. Authorities confirmed that about 25 others were injured, though their injuries were described as non life threatening.

RCMP said the suspect died of a self inflicted gunshot wound and was found inside the school. Investigators remain at the scene and have not yet released further details about the motive.

The incident has prompted messages of support from leaders across Western Canada. School safety and emergency preparedness are expected to be key issues in the coming days as officials in British Columbia continue their investigation.
