Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she will address Albertans in a televised speech on Thursday, one week before the province’s 2026 budget is tabled in the legislature.
Smith made the announcement during an unrelated news conference in Calgary but did not provide details on what topics she intends to cover. A spokesperson for the Premier’s Office said further information about the address would be released at a later time.
The speech comes ahead of Finance Minister Nate Horner’s scheduled budget presentation on Feb. 26. The government has already signalled that the fiscal plan will reflect economic pressures tied to lower global oil prices, which continue to affect provincial revenues.
In recent public remarks, Smith has cautioned that Albertans should prepare for a budget projecting significant deficits. She has ruled out introducing new taxes or implementing deep cuts to public services, positioning the government’s approach as focused on fiscal restraint while maintaining core programs.
The premier’s last major televised address included a commitment to hold a referendum on provincial separation if enough citizens sign a petition under Alberta’s citizen initiative legislation, an issue that has generated debate across the province.
The upcoming address is expected to outline the government’s priorities as Alberta navigates economic uncertainty and prepares for the spring legislative session.
