Bombay HC Grants Interim Relief to Kumar Sanu in Defamation Case

BY Connect Newsroom - Jasmine Singh, Jan 26, 2026 2:03 PM - REPORT AN ERROR

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday granted temporary relief to veteran singer Kumar Sanu in a ₹50 crore defamation lawsuit against his former wife, Rita Bhattacharya, issuing a gag order to curb the circulation of alleged defamatory content. Justice Milind Jadhav directed Bhattacharya and certain independent media outlets to refrain from making, publishing, or sharing any statements deemed false, slanderous, or damaging to the singer and his family.

The court noted that Bhattacharya’s interviews appeared to cross the bounds of fair comment and contained what it described as a personal attack on Sanu. It further barred her from posting or circulating such material across social media, print, or digital platforms until the interim application is decided.

Sanu’s counsel told the court that the interviews had caused significant personal and financial damage, including the cancellation of overseas shows.
